Balance Buddies | Bringing Biking to School

In 2017 we launched Balance Buddies – an educational initiative that teaches children road safety and confidence through balance bikes. Road safety is an integral part of the early years curriculum, and we wanted to provide schools and nurseries with an opportunity to teach the subject simply and confidently with our resources.

Balance Buddies covers all seven elements of the Early Years Foundation Stage:

  • Communication and Language
  • Physical Development
  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development
  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Expressive Arts and Design
  • Understanding the World

We have visited lots schools up and down the country, sharing the initiative with lots of children from nursery age up to year one. We are currently in 50 schools, providing an easy to follow, active package that allows little ones to learn to ride through balance bikes.

A balance bike is a bike with no pedals or stabilisers, making it a really simple platform for a child to develop strength, coordination, balance and confidence. Children who ride bikes with stabilisers learn how to pedal but not to balance, so have to start a lengthy learning process all over again when the stabilisers are removed. Our ergonomically designed balance bikes will ultimately make the transition to a pedal bike easy and hassle free. Children from as young as 18 months can have a go!

We are keen to see children learn to cycle safely from as early as possible and where better to start than school. For many children, schools can sometimes be the only opportunity for physical activity and structured play. We have worked with Early Years practitioners, preschools, nurseries, schools and the Preschool Learning Alliance to design a unique package that fits the curriculum and gets kids active.
